A worn chain doesn't just ride badly. It can snap. And a snapped chain at speed can crack your engine case, lock the rear wheel, or worse. If your throttle feels jerky, you hear clunking, or your chain has tight spots and rust — it's time. We use only Japanese chains and hardened steel sprockets. No aluminum. No shortcuts. You're on the highway. The chain snaps. Three things can happen, none of them good:
A chain and sprocket replacement costs a couple hundred dollars. A cracked engine case or a hospital visit costs exponentially more. The math is the same as valve adjustments and brake pads: maintenance now is a fraction of repair later.
A new chain on worn sprockets wears out fast — sometimes in a few thousand kilometers. The sprocket teeth have already worn into the old chain's stretched pattern. A new chain won't match that pattern and will grind itself down trying. Always replace both. Always.

These are the chains we stock and recommend. Proven quality, proper seals, consistent manufacturing. A chain is not a place to save $30.
Steel lasts. Period. We use only hardened steel sprockets — front and rear. They'll outlast aluminum by a factor of three or more.
Aluminum is many times softer than hardened steel. An aluminum sprocket wears out quickly — sometimes in a single season of regular riding. As it wears, the hooked teeth accelerate chain wear. You end up replacing both again, far sooner than you should. We seriously do not recommend them.

Steel is magnetic. Aluminum is not. If you bought a kit online and aren't sure whether the rear sprocket is steel or aluminum, hold a magnet to it. If it doesn't stick, it's aluminum — and it won't last. We'll replace it with steel.
Unknown brands, eBay specials, Amazon alphabet-soup names. A chain failure at speed is catastrophic. The $30 saved on a no-name chain isn't worth the risk. EK, RK, DID — that's it.

Jerky throttle, clunking from below, visible rust, kinked links, or uneven slack — tight in one spot, loose in another. If you're constantly adjusting tension, the chain is stretched beyond its service limit. We'll inspect it and give you an honest answer.
Three things: it can whip your leg with massive force, punch a hole through your engine case by bunching at the front sprocket, or jam the rear wheel causing a lockup. All of them are serious. Don't let it get to that point.
